A loss of balance also increases the risk of falls. This is a serious and even life-threatening complications. Falls are the leading cause of injuries \u2013 including fatal injuries \u2013 for people who are older than 65.<\/p>\n<p>Balance disorders are severe owing to the risk of falls. However, occasionally balance problems may warn of another health condition such as a heart disorder or a problem in the brain or, alternatively, other parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za\/blog\/what-makes-up-the-nervous-system\/\">nervous system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of all the possible causes as well as overlapping symptoms, balance problems can be quite tricky to diagnose. For these reasons, it is important to see a health-care professional so that the source of your balance problem can be properly and promptly identified. Treatments, when needed, are usually simple and effective.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The most common types of balance problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most common symptoms of balance problems are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vertigo which is a sensation that everything around you is spinning or moving or that you yourself are spinning around.<\/li>\n<li>Light headedness or \u2018near-fainting\u2019 (presyncope). This is a feeling of weakness or dizziness.<\/li>\n<li>This presents as a feeling of imbalance and disorientation. Occasionally, a loss of your feeling of time or place may be felt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Balance problems may be related to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inner ear problems (which are the most common sources of vertigo)<\/li>\n<li>Headache (as well as migraines)<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety or panic<\/li>\n<li>Ringing in your ears<\/li>\n<li>Allergies or, alternatively, infections<\/li>\n<li>Getting up quickly from sitting lying position<\/li>\n<li>A growth on the auditory nerve (such as an acoustic neuroma)<\/li>\n<li>Problems with the nerves in your legs and feet<\/li>\n<li>Low blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Side Plank with Lateral Kettlebell Raise\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/exyBcv-Z9GI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Exercises for balance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A programme that includes exercises for balance should contain movements that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase flexibility in the neck and torso,<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen the lower body, ankle complex, quadriceps, arms, back and abdominals,<\/li>\n<li>Force you to weight-shift,<\/li>\n<li>Gradually decrease your base of support and go from a table surface to an unstable surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These balance exercises should be adjusted to suit each specific population group.<\/p>\n<p>A balance programme should progress from a two-legged stance that minimally challenges stability to a more complex stance. The <a href=\"https:\/\/trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za\/blog\/what-are-the-stages-of-progression\/\">progression<\/a> evolves in this manner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two-legged exercise with minimal challenge to stability<\/li>\n<li>Staggered stance<\/li>\n<li>Single-leg base of support<\/li>\n<li>Two-legged exercise, unstable surface<\/li>\n<li>Single-leg exercise, unstable surface<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The arm progression goes as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two arms<\/li>\n<li>Alternate arms<\/li>\n<li>One arm<\/li>\n<li>One arm with movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After a client assessment and medial clearance, a programme might contain some of the following exercises and stances:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Warm-up<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Walking forward and backward<\/li>\n<li>Side to side\/carioca<\/li>\n<li>Walking forward and backward on heels\/toes<\/li>\n<li>Squats to single-leg balance<\/li>\n<li>Step-ups, front\/side<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Head turns and warm movements can be added when the client is ready.<\/p>\n<p>During the resistance work the client should begin with easy exercises and gradually progress to more challenging ones. Here, the easiest exercises are listed first followed by more challenging ones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Standing on one leg, eyes open; standing on one leg, eyes closed<\/li>\n<li>Two-legged wall ball squat; single-leg squat with reach<\/li>\n<li>Prone dumbbell row on stability ball; single-leg cable row<\/li>\n<li>Seated PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) on stability ball; seated PNF on ball with side reach<\/li>\n<li>Cable triceps extension on stability ball, single-leg triceps kickback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za\/contact-us\/\"><strong>Contact Trifocus Fitness Academy<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Want to learn about other exercises that you can teach people?
