In this article, we\u2019ll have a look at what \u2018range of motion\u2019 means and how it fits in with the world of personal training and the fitness industry in general.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does \u2018Range Of Motion\u2019 Mean?<\/h2>\n<p>The term \u2018range of motion\u2019 refers to how far a joint can move. This is usually expressed in degrees. Each joint in your body has typical ranges of motion.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons <\/a>the range of motion for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The elbow in flexion is between 0 and 150 degrees while in extension it is 0 degrees, and<\/li>\n<li>The hip in flexion is between 0 and 120 degrees while in extension it is between 0 and 30 degrees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Range of motion can be limited owing to a mechanical problem or diseases such as osteoarthritis and\u00a0rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n<h2>How Can Range Of Motion Be Improved?<\/h2>\n<p>Strength and conditioning coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/learn\/the-best-way-to-develop-active-range-of-motion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Durand<\/a>, says that there are two ways to improve range of motion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Passive range of motion exercises where someone helping you to improve your flexibility.<\/li>\n<li>Active range of motion exercises which you can do yourself to improve your range of motion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What\u2019s The Connection Between Range Of Motion And Prime Mover Exercises?<\/h2>\n<p>There are certain muscles in your body, says certified strength and conditioning specialist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/259009-muscles-that-are-prime-movers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Bowden<\/a>, that are responsible for activating the major joints.<\/p>\n<p>These are prime movers are the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latissimus dorsi<\/li>\n<li>Pectorals<\/li>\n<li>Quadriceps<\/li>\n<li>Hamstrings<\/li>\n<li>Deltoids<\/li>\n<li>Biceps and triceps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a number of exercises that sculpt these muscles.
