This has become quite the trend but how effective is it actually?<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of an exercise ball in the office<\/h2>\n<p>Sitting on a chair requires pretty much no <strong>muscle<\/strong> activity and it can actually hurt for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When sitting on chairs, people tend to slouch or hunch and display bad <strong>posture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sitting in a chair actually puts your <strong>abs<\/strong> into slack mode which decreases your <strong>core strength<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using an <strong>exercise ball<\/strong> will counteract\u00a0poor <strong>posture<\/strong> as well as the slacking of your <strong>abs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9521\" src=\"https:\/\/trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/shutterstock_376060699-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Trifocus - exercise ball\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Fitness professionals&#8217; words of advice<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t think that just because you&#8217;ve hoofed out your office chair in favour of an <strong>exercise ball<\/strong> that your <strong>posture<\/strong> will be automatically corrected! Larry G Merritt\u00a0and Celynne M Merritt &#8211; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1924654\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association<\/em><\/a> &#8211;\u00a0speculate that the reason for this\u00a0is a lack of knowledge (on the part of people swopping out their chairs for exercise balls.)<\/p>\n<p>Sitting properly on a ball will require muscular contractions of the <strong>core<\/strong> and your <strong>hip<\/strong> and <strong>leg muscles<\/strong> will be used to maintain balance which will also contribute to <strong>muscle<\/strong> tone. It is a good idea if you stand up and walk around a bit every now and then to get your circulation going.<\/p>\n<h2>A workable solution<\/h2>\n<p>Instead of kicking the chair to the curb and using only an <strong>exercise ball<\/strong>, or forgetting about the ball completely and using only the chair, why not alternate between the two? You could sit on the chair for a couple of hours and then the <strong>exercise ball<\/strong> for an hour and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Before using the <strong>exercise ball<\/strong>, ensure that it is inflated properly. Your <strong>thighs<\/strong> should be parallel to the floor when you\u2019re sitting on it. An exercise\u00a0ball that is too soft can cause discomfort and it can be difficult to stay on the ball.
